What is Self Study
Self-Study – is anything you learn outside a classroom environment by yourself without a set syllabus or examinations. Unlike traditional methods of schooling your self-learning efforts are not measured by how well you perform in an exam.
Self Study along with the traditional form of education at his/her early age would bring about the best in a child & also define the character of that child in future. Why?
Because, the Self Study disciplines a child, expands the scope of knowledge, learning different skills so necessary for future growth.
What you study and learn in the classroom within the four walls, with Teacher and colleagues is important in gaining subject knowledge as per syllabus. Here, your learning and experiences are predefined & restricted with all the diversions, distractions and other inhibitions that are part of classroom teachings.
With what maturity you present / conduct yourself to your the world, friends, colleagues is a reflection of your character. And your character is certainly built by your relentless pursuits in acquiring variety of Skills & knowledge that you have gained over a period of your age span
Therefore it would be prudent to say that: knowledge, awareness, is evolved through persistent self-learning, self-studying, self-teach, self-experiencing, self nurture, self exploration, self improvement, self-confidence, self motivation, self-rewarding, self-assurance, self-empowerment.
Self Study is quickly growing in popularity among students all over. By complementing formal education with home study, students can see a drastic improvement to grades, subject understanding, and confidence.
Students usually study at home to add onto what they studied in class. However, self study can also be used to master a new skill or learn an entirely new concept – for example like a Drama, language or computer language, hair stylist , musical instrument. The benefits you can gain from self study are endless and are completely determined by your goals.
All performers , achievers & Rank holders have extra skills and abilities to think and do things very differently & most importantly continously.
There are various self studying methods you can implement at home (i.e. self study tips (complete solo) or with you) that can bring about many educational benefits both in and out of school.
Some of the methods adopted by many & including me in Self Learning are :-
A) Define a ideal time to self study at home.
Must have a time, daily to do the extra study i.e self-teach. This is irrespective of all the extra activities at home. also, plan your supplimentary study, which will bring in good results later.
B) To Create an Interest and regularize it.
- a strong self conviction (daily promise to yourself) that i will start to read extra to gain the extra knowledge.
- Ready lots of books, periodicals, magazines, on related subject that you can lay your hands on. Only when try to explore the extra, you will know the interesting and inspiring articles.
- In this modern era of Internet, every information is available online. This is not only in plain text, but also in presentation, slides, video’s, simulations.
- Choose your most convenient time, place & environment to enjoy your study.
- Most important, make this a habit. This will enable you to enjoy experiencing, creating choices, experimenting, planning, focussing on assignments/projects.
- Study in short spurts (i.e. duration) to maintain interest. Long duration makes it boring and you tend to loose interest.
C) Knowing your limits and challenging them. i.e. raising the bar yourself
What we learn with Pleasure we never forget.
– Alfred Mercier
- The moment you feel, self motivated, self assured, you get to understand your limits, with increased confidence, you are then able to challenge yourself i.e. raise the bar.
- In the competetive world, it’s important & imperative that we realise the factor of – to compete and win.
- This is achieved only through, discipline, postive mental attitude, and as a winner.
- There are many traits, skills that we are even not aware of that we possess, only by trying different approaches to learning, we are able to rediscover ourselves
IMPORTANCE OF SELF-STUDY
Self-studying is a great method students can use to enhance their learning experience, whether they are studying for a course or learning about a topic for fun.
Using self-study, students are able to go beyond simply learning what their class textbooks and instructors teach them. By practicing self-study, they are encouraged to further explore topics they are interested in, developing stronger study skills as a result.
One of the major advantages of self-study is that students can take control over their own learning. And when students have control, they become even more interested in learning.
Which is very good motivator and hence performing better.
Self-learning is the modern form of learning. Not that it has replaced traditional, instructional learning, but it has supplemented it and with some great results. Self-directed learning has been proven to be effective, convenient, and fast, thanks to the rise of the internet. You can learn how to do almost anything through a simple Google search, by watching a YouTube tutorial, and by simply reading instruction manuals.
Self-learning is the new form of learning that is equipping people with skills that are relevant to their daily activities. However, this can be a challenging form of learning even for the brightest students, since it requires lots of discipline.
Self-driven learning comes from a personal desire to gain new knowledge. It is driven by the need to find more information about a topic and use the information for a particular purpose. Therefore, you have a clear purpose of why you are learning and the information gained is often relevant, making it meaningful.
Additionally, you are inclined to search deeper information about a topic since you are not just learning for the sake of learning. Learning now has a purpose and is enjoyable, leading to good results.
A great part of learning is to satisfy some level of curiosity and learning occurs naturally when there is curiosity. This, therefore, means that you will be motivated to learn and you will get to acquire much more knowledge when the drive comes from within than from outside sources. It becomes an adventure and your capabilities are expanded each time you successfully learn something new.
YouTube tutorials, webinars, Magazines, books, periodicals, online pedia’s, even online courses, knowledge based blogs, websites, are some modes of e-learning and at your time of comfort. You can enjoy this learning while travelling, leisure times, relaxed environment, without any apprehensions and you can study using any mode.
They know enough who knows how to learn – Henry Adams
Students benefit from self-studying habits to prepare for a more independent learning environment in college.
While it is not likely that the classroom as an educational forum will ever be entirely replaced, as the benefits of a physical space for collaboration with intellectual and social growth is undeniable along with teacher (Mentor). Self-learning will likely become increasingly integrated into traditional educational institutions.
Students of all ages may find exploring a subject matter of interest or learning a new skill on their own time, and at a low cost.
A feeling of freedom and self-determination can come with being your own teacher, as it is believed that if people begin with learning what they really want to, then that thirst for knowledge will spread to every known subject.
Self-learning does take a lot of discipline and can be difficult at first, but like any endeavor, with time it becomes easier. Self-study, when done correctly, is a very effective learning tool, so it can be helpful when used to prepare for a test or learn an entirely new subject matter on your own.
